There is More Than One Type of Sleep Apnea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common type of this condition is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This means that the airway gets blocked or partially constricted when your facial tissues relax, often causing snoring sounds. However, there is one more type called central sleep apnea, where it&#8217;s your brain that&#8217;s the culprit, as it doesn&#8217;t tell your muscles to breathe!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.) &nbsp;Experts Estimate That Many Sleep Apnea Cases are Undiagnosed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s estimated that about 2 to 9% of adults have OSA, but some studies say it&#8217;s about 20%. You might ask, \u201cWhy is there such a jump?&#8221; It&#8217;s because it&#8217;s estimated that about 90% of sleep apnea cases are undiagnosed. Many people think that snoring is just an annoyance they have to deal with in their partners, without realizing that it can be a life-threatening condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.) &nbsp;Those With Sleep Apnea May Have Hundreds of Episodes a Night<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you stop breathing due to sleep apnea, it is known as an episode, with the exact number you experience depending on your severity. For instance, having a mild condition means you may stop breathing 5 to 15 times per hour, while those with a severe case can experience over 30 episodes an hour.&nbsp; Each time, it disrupts your sleep cycle, so getting a good night&#8217;s rest can be tough to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.) An Oral Appliance Can Sometimes Treat Sleep Apnea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Undisturbed sleep is needed to stay healthy, and thankfully, an oral appliance can help those with mild to moderate OSA. It is similar to a mouth guard, but wearing this handy device slightly moves your lower jaw forward, keeping your airway open! If you have a severe case, then you may benefit from a CPAP machine, which delivers a continuous stream of air. Sometimes your dentist may recommend a mixture of both devices, but regardless of which one works for you, it&#8217;ll help you get on track to sleeping throughout the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to sleep apnea, it can be easy to dismiss its common snoring symptoms as an annoyance. However, ignoring this sign can be a bad idea as it can make you more prone to accidents while driving, have poor memory, or experience mood swings.
